Cinco de Mayo
Cinco de Mayo is the annual celebration of the victory by Mexico over the French in the Battle of Pueblo on May 5, 1862. It serves as an important way to commemorate Mexican heritage and culture in the United States. And from what we have experienced, a special day right here in Newcastle.
Reflecting back to 2021, the challenges posed by the Covid pandemic were still prominent in our daily lives and we were trying so hard to have some normalcy and find a way to turn lemons into lemonade (with this story limes might be more appropriate though! LOL). We wanted to bring joy to the neighborhood and became inspired by drive-by social gatherings, so we decided to create a "Walk-By" Cinco de Mayo Fiesta! Our front yard transformed for the evening with our inflatable Mariachi Cactus and a fantastic playlist filled the air featuring artists such as the Gypsy Kings, Gloria Estefan, and Jennifer Lopez (special thanks to Christian for creating that perfect mix!). To accompany the festive ambiance, Matt squeezed countless limes (thanks for your dedication!) and we served up refreshing margaritas in disposable to-go glasses, expertly prepared by Matteo (A.K.A. Matt). We had over 50 people come by and many stayed for a while and danced in the driveway!
This spontaneous party we started to bring joy in a hard time has turned into another tradition for our family. We love that it created community, camaraderie and injected some spirit into the community. So, if you happen to spot a Mariachi Catus in a yard in Newcastle you know the fun is coming! If you aren’t able to join us or throw a party yourself but still want to celebrate…there are amazing local Mexican restaurants in Newcastle that you can pop over to for some fiesta time and incredible food and margaritas!
