A Transplant Tradition for Turkey Day
Years ago in a land far far away (MinneSNOWta, lol) Uncle Bill started a tradition of getting his buddies and their families together on Thanksgiving morning for a good ole’ fashioned Turkey Bowl...a friendly game of football followed with a symbolic swig of Wild Turkey and then everyone was off to their homes for their feasts with their immediate families.
When Uncle Bill passed, we promised to keep the tradition alive with our own rendition. Who would have thought that our little Minnesota tradition would survive a couple of out-of-state moves and would still be going strong 20 years later? Well, it turns out our little Turkey Bowl tradition became a great way to feel right at home and to celebrate our friends whom we refer to as “chosen family”.
Every year brings a fun mix of friends from the neighborhood, the kids’ schools and sporting teams and sometimes even passers-by who we welcome in. Each year starts with an assortment of homemade breads and delicious beverages for all to enjoy. And in the spirit of full disclosure, we must amidst the annual favorite “Nutella Bread” is really more of a pound cake and the “MOMosas” do have some bubbly involved!
After we’ve enjoyed breakfast together some decide to remain in the comforts of our dry and warm home while others venture out into the street for some football. By noon, we’re all wrapped up and everyone is off to their immediate families for their own Turkey traditions.
If you happen to be a transplant yourself or are looking for a fun way to get people together for an event you might want to consider starting your own tradition, or what the heck, just stop by our house to join ours.
Your home team wishes you the most thankful and fun Thanksgiving ever!
Cheers!
