Love Letter Legacy
Because we’re in the Real Estate business, when people hear us talk about Love Letters they assume we mean the kind a buyer client might send to a seller to express their love and intentions with the home they want to purchase.
Well, for the purpose of this article, we’re expressing a very different kind of Love Letter. Years ago, when Uncle (aka FUN-kle) Bill was preparing for his transition to Heaven, he was concerned about his legacy and how to pass along his life lessons to his Grandchildren. He asked us to write down his top lessons and teach them to the next generation as a way of honoring his legacy and ensuring the “Skally Way” lives on forever.
While our children were too young at the time to understand the life lessons, they have served as a constant reminder of how to raise and teach them to maximize our one precious life. They inspired us to create the Skally Olympics, to carry on our friends and family Turkey Bowls (started in the 1970s by Funkle Bill and his buddies), and to get to the lakes as often as possible. After all, as Uncle Bill famously used to say and write in his Love Letter.,, “When it’s 90 and sunny, go to the beach”!
Years after Uncle Bill’s Passing, Matt asked his Dad to write a Love Letter to the family with his life’s lessons. After 5 years of his Dad avoiding it, Matt finally drew a line in the sand. He said, Dad, don’t bother coming to Christmas this year if you don’t bring the Love Letter with you. Guess what, Dad showed up with the letter and it was packed full of wonderful life lessons. For example, “you must develop skills to bring to the table of life!...you will be trading your skill set for all of the things you want...a good mate, comfortable home, a nice car, and other “toys” that make life fun and happy”.
Recently, we have experienced the sudden loss of family members and friends and it has been a constant reminder to live each day to the fullest, to spread joy and love to all around us, and to not wait in writing those Love Letters to our family and chosen family. Matt got his done last year and Christina is still working on hers. One of the highlights from Matt’s is “life is for laughing, loving and living”
We sure hope this article inspires you in some way to capture your life’s great memories and lessons and to proactively share them with your family and friends. Doing so helps us love each day we are blessed with and to live on forever in the hearts, minds and actions of all those we touch!
Blessings to all!
Matt & Christina
