What are your favorites?
Over the years we’ve discovered that one of the great secrets of life seems to be learning from experience.
Although we have had incredible life experiences there are so many things we just haven’t done and just don’t know.
What’s the best way to close the experience gap and maximize our one precious life? We’ve found it best to approach every situation with curiosity and openness. We call it “what are your favorites”.
A recent red-eye flight to see family in Minnesota, with a layover in Chicago, provides a great example of this. When we arrived in Chicago just before dawn we were half asleep and hungry. As we walked to our next gate we were thrilled to notice a bagel shop was just beginning to open.
When we approached the shop the team member seemed tired herself and was not very engaged. We imagined her day was getting off to a bad start.
When she asked us what we wanted, Matt went to our usual response…what are your favorites on the menu? After a nice exchange, Matt ordered her top recommendation. It was a jalapeño and cheese bagel with egg and bacon.
As Matt took his first bite he was shocked by the enormous pile of fresh bacon on the bagel. He started thinking - how could they make any money with so much bacon on this bagel? It was epic and so delicious!
After we finished eating Matt went over to tell the team member how much he enjoyed it. You could see a twinkle in her eye. He then said to her, that sure was a lot of bacon…did you happen to put a little extra on there? She winked. We left her a big tip. It seemed we made her day and she certainly made ours.
The next time you happen to be out and about we recommend you consider asking the locals what they’re having. We know you’ll learn some amazing things, likely enjoy it more than you could imagine, and perhaps make their day and yours as well. As the late great Ed Foreman would say, life is for laughing, loving and living. Make it a great day folks!
Blessings,
Matt & Christina
